As cases of politically-motivated violence continue to soar and besiege Zimbabwe’s volatile political landscape ahead of the crucial by-elections to be held in just over a week’s time, Thokozile Dube, an Umzingwane Ward 20 aspiring candidate under the banner of the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party was last night reportedly attacked by the ruling Zanu PF-aligned assailants.
Although details of the attack were still sketchy Thursday morning with policing authorities yet to confirm the sad development, pressure group, Heal Zimbabwe Trust reported that the attack on Dube was after she had to refused to withdraw her candidacy in the looming polls, apparently to skew the electoral field in the favor of her Zanu PF counterpart in the race to replace the late trade unionist and ruling party politician, Nqabeni Nkala who succumbed to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
“@ZANUPF_Official supporters last night attacked @CCCZimbabwe Umzingwane Ward 20 aspiring candidate, Thokozile Dube for refusing to withdraw her candidacy. Last month, she was also attacked,” said Heal Zimbabwe in a tweet this morning.
Earlier Wednesday evening, the CCC had also posted an alert, saying:
Our Mzingwane ward 20 female candidate Thokozile Dube is currently under attack. Zanupf thugs are surrounding her home. They’ve destroyed most of her property including jojo water tanks. She needs urgent help.”
In a preceding alert, the party had reported that the ruling party assailants had attacked members of their campaign team who were putting up posters around the ward.
The thugs, said the CCC, also broke the political aspirant’s phone.
