Zimbabwe News Today 25 July 2016, Zanu PF Congress to Remove Mnangagwa
Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s vice president is under pressure following revelations last week that war veterans have distanced themselves from Mugabe in preference of him.
What makes the sitiuation bad is there is noone claiming responsibility for the authorship of an anti Mugabe document that has been circulating since Thursday.
There is consensus in the ruling party that the offonsive declaration originates from Mnangagwa’s faction known by the moniker Team Lacoste.
While Mnangagwa issued a statement condemning the actions of war vets, it was too little and too late for many in the rival G40 faction.
Yesterday, we reported here that Team Lacoste(and possibly Mnangagwa) are being investigated by the security service of Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile there are calls for Mnangagwa to answer some difficult questions pertaining to recent events.
Zanu PF Manicaland provincial youth leader Mubuso Chinguno told a weekend rally that Mnangagwa should either come clean or be expelled.
“Some war veterans keep on endorsing Mnangagwa. We chose Robert Mugabe as our candidate for the 2018 elections; if you endorse someone [else], it’s treasonous,” he said.
“Mnangagwa should come clean. If he is using the war veterans, he should be expelled from the party just like Mujuru and her cabal,” he added.
Youth leader Kudzi Chipanga suggested that the party should organise a special congress to settle the succession debate.
“All members in the politburo were appointed by President Mugabe so why should we be bothered by people who were appointed?” he charged in reference to Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa has been under the spotlight ever since the departure of Joice Mujuru from Zanu PF.
Many believe Mugabe was planning to handover power to him(Mnangagwa) until his wife, first lady Grace joined mainstream politics.
