Gokwe residents had a once-in-a-lifetime treat last Friday night during the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) national tournament with Victoria Falls emerging victorious amid calls for the business community to financially cushion the sport for its survival.
The tournament that was held at Gokwe Hotel saw Vic Falls walking away with six gold medals and one silver while second-placed Kwekwe bagged four gold medals and six silver medals.
The tournament was graced by ZBF Technical Director Stephen Masiyambombo with Madron ‘Boss Madro’ Matiza and Join Africa Business Network (JABN) sponsoring the tourney.
“Boxing as a sport is really being threatened by lack of financing and it is time that the business community comes into the fold for the survival of the game,” Boss Madro said.
“What really needs to be done now is for everyone to realize its importance and how it can contribute to the national fiscus. It has to be noted that there are quite a number of families that have been benefiting from the sport and the country has been itching for the new Mosquito Zvenyika,” he said.
