Zimbabwe international footballer Oscar Machapa has fled political disturbances in the Democratic Republic of Congo and will miss his club AS Vita’s Caf Champions League match against Saint George in Ethiopia on Saturday.

Machapa arrived at the Harare International Airport yesterday afternoon and told SportsZone he would monitor the situation in DRC from home.

A conflict between the DRC’s armed forces and a militia calling itself Kamuina Nsapu has sent over 20 000 refugees across the border into Angola.

“I am back home because it’s not safe in the DRC right now,” Machapa told SportsZone at the airport.

AS Vita are owned by an army general Gabriel Amisi Kumba and the team has been training under heavy military guard. state media
