Today Zimbabwe’s 34000 war veterans will have 10000 of their representatives in Harare to meet President Robert Mugabe over a number of issues that have shaken the rulling party since the expulsion of former Vice President Joice Mujuru towards the end of 2014.
While key details of the indaba have not been divulged to the media the meeting is expected to address among other things succession, Mugabe retirement and infighting among different factions.
War veterans are bitter enemies with G40 faction which is a pro Grace Mugabe Zanu PF faction.
On the other hand they have fallen in love with Team Lacoste faction, allegedly the power pushing Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed President Mugabe.
Speaking ahead of the meeting Cde Douglas Mahiya said they would like the government to show them respect and look into their welfare, especially payment of hospital fees, and their children’s school and college fees.
The war veterans also demanded mining concessions to improve their welfare.
They asked for the review of their pension so that they are above the poverty datum line.
Cde Victor Matemadanda noted that the government must prioritise war veterans’ welfare by allowing them the right to have a stake in controlling Zimbabwe’s resources.
