UNICEF Zimbabwe, under the Spotlight Initiative this afternoon handed state-of-the-art Forensic Genetic (DNA) Equipment to the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Harare.
The equipment is expected to be critical in the administration of justice especially in murder, rape and serial and gender based violence (SGBV) cases.
The establishment of a DNA capability within the police was identified as a key priority to ensure that DNA samples collected in the context of SGBV cases are analyzed and presented to court.
Over the years, some cases requiring DNA have taken ages to be tried and finalised.
Zimbabwe has in some instances relied on sending samples to South Africa for DNA tests, whose results have taken long.
Forensic DNA tests are required in cases like murder, rape, gender based violence among others.
