President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa says there is now a rule that all who have reached the level of Major-Gen are national heroes, but warned that those performs contrary to the authority’s expectations will miss this great honour.

He made the remarks after conferring the late Rtd Army General Sydney Bhebhe with the national hero status when he visited the his home in Cranborne, Harare to pay his condolences.

“But if you start performing at variance with the expectations you will not be accorded a (national) hero status. So we will honour him (Major-Gen Bhebe) as such,” he said.

He added that the Heroes Acre boasts of housing great fallen heros and urged likely candidates to perform in line with expectations.

“We have iconic figures at the National Heroes Acre like former Vice President (Joshua) Nkomo and former Vice President Muzenda, the likes of Cde Chitepo, among others, so if you again perform contrary to expectations, you cannot be buried where they are buried.”

Meanwhile, before he died late former President Robert Mugabe denied to be buried at the National Heroes Acre and was buried at his rural home in Kutama.

Apparently, late VP Joshua Nkomo’s family wants his remains exhumed from the Heroes Acre for burial at his rural home.
