University of Zimbabwe chancellor who is facing court case of awarding a dubious degree to former first lady Grace Mugabe, Prof Levi Nyagura has retired.

In a public notice Doctor Anxious J Masuka who is chairman of University of Zimbabwe council said Prof Nyagura formally left the institution on 31 March 2019. Masuka said, ” We wish to inform University of Zimbabwe Community, stakeholders and the public that Prof Levi M Nyagura retired as Vice Chancellor of UZ with effect from 31 March 2019.”

Prof Nyagura joined on 2 April 1978 as a lecturer in Department of Curriculum and Arts Education, Faculty of Education. He rose through the ranks to become Deputy Dean of Faculty of Education (1982-1983), chairperson of Department of Curriculum Studies (1986- 1989) Pro Vice Chancellor (1995-2002) and later Vice Chancellor, post he held for 16 years. He was instrumental in establishment of Bindura University of Science and Technology, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Masvingo University College into Great Zimbabwe University among others, added Masuka. However, he has been replaced by Professor Paul Mapfumo as acting Vice Chancellor while the hunt for a substantive Vice Chancellor is appreciated. Prof Mapfumo has by acting since 16 August 2018 after Prof Nyagura was suspended following his court case where is accused of awarding a fake doctorate to Grace Mugabe. The case is pending in courts.
