Statistics from the Zimbabwe Republic Police suggest that over 12 800 people have been arrested in connection with the violence being perpetrated by machete-wielding assailants in mining areas around the landlocked southern African country.
The operation targeting the assailants is codenamed Operation No To Machete Gangs and yesterday, 171 people were arrested in connection with the machete wars.
“171 people were arrested on operation No to Machete Gangs. The cumulative number since 01/01/22, stands at 12 845,” said the police.
Meanwhile, the ZRP also reported that 1 878 people were arrested yesterday for various offences related to the COVID-19, translating the cumulative number of arrests to 1 600 417 since the beginning of the coronavirus-induced national lockdown on March 30, 2020.
In relation to a blitz codenamed Operation No to Cross Border Crimes, the police said 468 people were arrested on Sunday, bringing the total figure of arrests to 127 792 since last year.
Added the ZRP:
“148 people were arrested on an operation targeting unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered vehicles and non complying PSVs. The cumulative number since 15/01/22 stands at 42 968”.
