Three people died while several others were left begging for their lives in a head on collision pitting a commuter omnibus and a haulage truck yesterday.
The fatal accident reportedly happened at the 25km peg along Karoi – Chinoyi road at around 19:30hrs.
According to the haulage truck driver Mr Bernard Zingwe the driver of the commuter omnibus was travelling at a terrific speed coming from Karoi going to Chinhoyi.
Mr Zingwe said on the 25km peg the driver of the commuter omnibus tried to overtake a Honda Fit which was still at a distance from where he was.
“Thus when he came into my lane and failed to control his vehicle resulting in the head on colusion,” he said.
The truck driver said the driver of the Honda Fit tried to slow down to create space for the omnibus but it was to no avail.
The fatal incident has since been confirmed by Inspector Daniel Mutamba who however could not give the names of the deceased as their next of kin are yet to be informed.
“I can confirm that there has been a head on accident at the Karoi- Chinhoyi road yesterday which claimed the lives of three. Circumstances leading to the accident are still being investigated however we suspect a lapse in judgment by the kombi driver.
The accident claimed the lives of the kombi driver and two other passengers who were sitting at the passenger seats in front of the vehicle. However we cannot reveal the names of the deceased as their next of kin are yet to be advised,” said in Mutamba.
He said the accident saw several others passengers sustaining minor injuries and were rushed to Karoi hospital.
