A social media user claiming to be President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba has impliedly admitted that the state is behind the abduction of critics.
Through a microblog Twitter handle believed to be one of Charamba’s accounts, which he is yet to confirm or disassociate himself from, it has come out that some abductions have been carried out by state agents.
In a response seemingly directed at human rights activist, Makomborero Haruzivishe, who at one time survived an abduction attempt, Charamba through the yet to confirmed handle implied that the state was responsible.
Unidentified men purporting to be police officers in plain clothes reportedly approached Haruzivishe, manhandled and cuffed him, trying to arrest him.
Haruzivishe was saved by members of the public.
Zimbabwe has long history of abductions allegedly carried out by state security agents. Some people like Itai Dzamara were abducted beyond trace, thus not to be seen again until now.
However, the government has been denying having anything to do with the abductions saying the victims were staging the abductions.
The real George Charamba has since distanced himself from the @georgecharamba twitter account.
