CHINESE FIRM TO DISPLACE OVER 20 000 PEOPLE IN DOMBOSHAVA, MUTODI DENIES SELLING MOUNTAIN TO CHINESE FIRM

By Tafadzwa Nyikadzino

Residents in Domboshava are living in fear and uncertainty as news came to them on Easter that a Chinese mining firm, China Aihua Jianye (PvtLtd) is aiming to displace them from their area to create space for setting up a USD$500 million quarry mine.

The mine which will be located at a mountain in Mverechena will see people who are located within the 5 kilometre radius of the location being removed to create space for the mega project. This will see over 20 000 residents being affected. Sources from the Ministry of Mines and Mining development which facilitated the deal are saying there is no clear plan on how the government and the Chinese firm will compensate those who will be affected by the deal.

Residents in Domboshava have vowed to resist being relocated by this firm and threatened to take all the necessary steps to stop the project as it will inconvenience their way of life. A meeting was held on Sunday by village heads and community members where they were coming up with avenues they can explore to stop this project from taking off.

One of the residents who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity said the company should be stopped from opening this mine because it would affected the lives of thousands of people. “Something has to be done to stop this company from operating because we cannot be displaced in such a difficult time. Where will we go? Where will we get the money to build new structures? What will happen to our children especially those who will seat for exams this year?”

The Member of Parliament for Goromonzi South Constituency Energy Mutodi said he was not aware of the company coming to his constituency when contacted for a comment. “I am not aware of that and if it is true that the Chinese bought that mountain to establish a quarry mine, it must have been facilitated by the Chief and village heads because I have nothing to do with it” he said.
