The oppressive government of Uganda has used emergency powers to shutdown all social media including Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook.
MTN Uganda announced yesterday:
“we wish to inform our customers that in line with the requirement of its license specifically article 7.4 that requires MTN to provide assistance to government in the event of an emergency or crisis related to National Security, the Uganda Communications Commission has issued a directive to shut down all social media platforms immediately until otherwise advised by government”.
Access to the social media is currently only possible via Virtual Private Networks (VPN) which masks the users location and circumvents the blockage.
This has been done to stop opposition protests during the inauguration and swearing in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni who recently got elected after rigging Uganda elections, according to opposition and pressure groups.
As we speak a number of opposition leading figures are either in jails or under house arrest.
President Mugabe Meets Lungu of Zambia
Meanwhile President Robert Mugabe briefly chatted with Edgar Lungu of Zambia on the sidelines during a dinner gathering for visiting heads of states at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala Uganda.
What they discussed remains a secret between the two Patriotic Front politicians.
