TWO police officers, stationed at Warren Park Police Station, appeared in court over the weekend after they allegedly facilitated the escape of two of their colleagues, who had been arrested for extortion.
The duo of John Mapurisa and Blessing Tendai Joniso appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda.
They were remanded in custody to today for bail consideration.
Allegations are that on March 9, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission received a report, relating to allegations of extortion, from Vany Dzinodya against a policeman.
ZACC investigators, Adam Welemu, Causemore Dambi and Brian Musokeri went to Warren Park Police Station, armed with Trap Authority.
At the station, Dzinodya met Constable Matsa, who was demanding US$220.
He gave him US$100 instead.
The US$100 was the trap money serialised in the trap authority.
The ZACC officers arrested Matsa just after he had received the money.
He didn’t resist.
Mapurisa and Joniso then charged at the ZACC demanding to know why they were arresting their workmate.
The duo allegedly accused the ZACC officials of inserting money in Matsa’s pockets.
The duo allegedly wrestled the ZACC officers, searching for the trap money, thus obstructing the officers from arresting Matsa.
Matsa escaped, during the commotion, and disappeared from the scene, with his left hand in handcuffs.
The next day, in the company of his lawyer, Matsa went to ZACC offices.
