Various top Zimbabwean artists are this weekend expected to grace the much hyped birthday concert for venerated dub-poet Chirikure Chirikure, who turns 60 tomorrow.
The Gutu-born multi-award winning writer, poet and musician told the state media that the impending gig, dubbed the “Chirikure Chirikure @60 Birthday Concert” will be graced by top performers who include Hope Masike, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana (above) and Thulani Machisa.
His friends, Albert Nyathi (pictured above) and Okay Machisa are also expected to be part of the line-up heralding the birthday concert that has been slated for Ela Gardens in Newlands.
Chirikure said his inclusion of the three divas- Hope, Prudence and Thulani- was a way of embracing influential women in society and also in sync with the Women’s Month celebrations.
Speaking glowingly of the womenfolk whom he described as pillars of the society, Chirikure said the Women’s Month is a gentle reminder to for society to embrace women.
“I have worked with Hope Masike and contributed a couple of lyrics to some of her songs, which saw our relationship as artists grow to this level. As for Prudence, she someone that I have collaborated with, along with Thulani Machisa, over the years. I have always treated women with dignity over the years considering the role they play in our lives,” he said.
Turning on to the inclusion of Nyathi and Machisa, the writer- who is a also an Honorary Fellow of the US-based University of Iowa, said:
“Nyathi is someone I have worked with over the years together with Okay Machisa. In other words, this is a balanced line-up that will give fans variety”.
