Ministry of Finance permanent secretary George Guvamatanga has confirmed the payment of a US$100 monthly cushioning allowance to civil servants with effect from 1 March.

He also pointed out that state pensioners will get US$50 in cushioning allowance every month.

However, last week’s sharp price increases on basic commodities may have already eaten into the new allowance before it is even paid out, critics note.

Civil servants particularly teachers have been at loggerheads with the government over salaries and better conditions of service.
