Gweru police are heavily hunting for money to sponsor the independence celebrations from motorist  at various roadblocks, a Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) officer has revealed to Zimnews.

All is not well in Zimbabwean roads where numerous roadblocks have been set up to eke out thousands of dollars in form of traffic fines from unsuspecting motorists to sponsor the nation’s Uhuru celebrations.

A police insider who declined to be named  told this reporter that an order came from Commissioner Augustine Chihuri for police to seriously work in all highways ahead of independence celebrations in order to raise funds.

“The police force has been given a target of $2000 per station towards the Uhuru celebrations, a direct order from Commissioner Augustine Chihuri came on Monday last week, the Commissioner has asked every police station to hand in at least US$2000 from their traffic fine coffers,” revealed the police officer.

This publication is also aware of rampant corruption in Shurugwi where the local police force is illegally cashing in on a $10 deal with motorists.

Drivers in Shurugwi  are paying $10 per week as a bribe to police so they can operate freely.

The government does not see any of this money which always ends up in the bottomless pockets of  a corrupt police cartel.

Zimbabwe police spokesperson was not available when Zimnews inquired about the 18 April Independence Day fundraising campaigns.
