Mnangagwa leads nation remember Father Zimbabwe Joshua Nkomo

Today Zimbabwe remembers 23 years after the death of Vice President Joshua Nkomo who passed away on 1 July 1999.

He was 82.

Nkomo died of prostate cancer at a local hospital in the capital.

He was a central cog in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, which evolved from mild civil resistance in the 1950s and 1960s to a bloody guerrilla war in the 1970s that left 40,000 dead.

White rule in the former British colony of Rhodesia ended in 1980 after the protracted armed struggle spanning over four decades, Nkomo spent 11 years in jail and seven years in exile.

The then ZAPU leader later joined hands with Robert Mugabe in 1987 and formed Zanu-PF.

Nkomo co-deputised Mugabe along with Simon Muzenda.
