BREAKING: Walter Mzembi loses UN election by 3 votes

Zimbabwe’s Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Doctor Walter Mzembi has lost United Nations elections for the secretary general’s post of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The votes were carried out early today(Friday) in Madrid, Spain.

Mzembi went into today’s’ votes with high spirits after Seychelles decided not to put forward its candidate.

He got 15 votes against 18 polled by Zurab Pololikashvili, a politician who hails from Georgia in the second round.

Mzembi had taken a lead in first round, see table below.

Many believe the African Union candidate lost largely due to the state of affairs back home in his native Zimbabwe.

In the run up to the elections, Mzembi bemoaned the state of tourism in Zimbabwe in particular to the mushrooming of state sponsored police roadblocks that are an eyesore not only to Zimbabweans but also to foreign visitors.

Below is how they voted..

First round results:

Zimbabwe (Mzembi) 11

Georgia 8

South Korea 7

Brazil 4

Colombia 3

Second round results:

Georgia 18

Zimbabwe (Mzembi) 15
