Zim legendary football coach, Rahman Gumbo dies

Just a few days after being sacked from Botswana’s Morupule Wanderers, the football community has announced that Rahman Gumbo has died.

Gumbo, aged 59, tragically collapsed and is suspected to have succumbed to a heart attack.

Gumbo is reported to have suffered a stroke at his home in Palapye, Botswana. He was with his son when he collapsed on Thursday. He was taken to a hospital, but his condition did not improve.

The medical staff then decided to move him to a medical facility in Francistown, where he was placed in the Intensive care unit. Gumbo died a few hours later.

The shocking news surfaced shortly after Morupule Wanderers released an official statement titled

“MORUPLILE WANDERERS FC PART WITH MESSRS RAHMAN GUMBO AND KITSO MASWENA.”

The club bid farewell to Gumbo and General Manager Kitso Maswena, expressing gratitude for their dedicated service and acknowledging their significant contributions.

The club stated: This communique officially announces that Morupule Wanderers Football Club has parted ways with the club Head Coach, Mr Rahman Gumb, and the club General Manager, Mr Kitso Maswena, respectively. We are grateful to Mr Gumbo and Mr Maswena for their dedication and contributions to our club.

Everyone at Morupule Wanderers wishes them the very best in their future endeavours. The club wishes to announce that Mr Agang Pule Mogotsi will take over as Head Coach interim. The club will not make further statements on the matter.”

Gumbo, known for his impactful tenure at Highlanders and his work with the Zimbabwe Warriors, leaves a legacy in African football that won’t be forgotten. He moved to Botswana with his family in 2021. However, in the last 11 months, he was dismissed from 2 football clubs in Botswana.

As the football world mourns this unexpected loss, the circumstances surrounding Gumbo’s untimely passing resonate deeply within the sporting fraternity. The community remains in mourning and will remember Rahman Gumbo for his invaluable contributions to the sport.
