Zanu PF will participate in 1 Million Men March on Africa Day 25 May.
How is it done: Each province in Zimbabwe is expected to bring 100000 youths to Harare.
Venue: Robert Mugabe Square in Harare. The youths, war vets and other people will march before congregating at the square where they will be addressed by President Robert Mugabe.
Costs: A Zanu PF youth organiser who refused to be named told reporters that ‘The One Million-Man March is expected to cost at least $1 million US dollars. While many are just looking at the money paid for buses and transportation. There is also some costs that come with policing, security and a lot of other things. If indeed there will be 1 million people it can even rise to $2 million in costs, ‘ he said.
Purpose: According to the youth organisers, the march is being held to support President Mugabe’s leadership of Zanu PF. This is happening when there are loud calls for regime change not just from opposition parties. Mugabe recently told reporters that War Vets want him out. He even accused them of travelling as far as China to ask for a new President for Zanu PF and Zimbabwe. The ruling party is currently experiencing fierce infighting over Mugabe succession. VP Emmerson Mnangagwa and First Lady Grace Mugabe are reportedly being pushed for the President job by Team Lacoste and G40 factions respectively. While the 2 have never admitted anything, there is clear tension over succession as Mugabe is expected to leave office soon.
Meanwhile President Robert Mugabe is set to receive his statue from some youth supporters who have created the artwork in order to get the opportunity to shake Mugabe’s hand..see photos below
