An elephant died on the spot while 2 people escaped with minor injuries when a Zambian registered Zalawi truck ploughed into a herd of elephants between Cross Mabale and Gwayi River.
The truck was loaded with coal and on its way to Bulawayo.
The dead elephant was skinned and its meat donated to a local children’s home.
A worker from a nearby Ivory Lodges witnessed the accident around 7 pm on Sunday.
According to the witness the lorry driver was speeding and did not stop when he encountered a herd of elephants in the middle of the road.
He hit a bull elephant forcing him off the road where his truck overturned.
He only managed to climb out of the truck after the angry elephants had left the accident scene.
