LATEST..Polls have officially closed in Zambia elections..Exceptions are being made for the polling stations which opened late – they will stay open later to compensate for the lost time.
Voting is currently underway in Zambia’s mouth watering elections.
Zambians are voting for new president, national assembly parliamentary representatives and a constitutional referendum.
For the presidency, observers expect a very tight neck to neck contest between President Edgar Lungu’s governing PF party and the opposition UPND led by Hakainde Hichilema.
For the first time, a presidential candidate must win more than 50% of the vote to avoid a run-off.
As Zambians ago for Presidential and Parliamentary elections on 11 August 2016, there is a lot of expectation and tension following violence between ruling party and opposition supporters in the run up to today’s elections.
The main fight is between two candidates President Edgar Lungu(PF leader), who has been in office for just a year and a half, and businessman Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition United Party for National Development.
Mr Lungu took office in January 2015 after the death of President Michael Sata.
