A five year plan has been launched between the government of Zimbabwe and the World Food Programme (WFP) to end hunger, build resilience and boost nutrition in the country.
WFP Zimbabwe Representative and Country Director Eddie Rowe said the new plan is to maintain strong emergency capacity, building resilience of the vulnerable, food insecure Zimbabweans and reinforcing national social protection efforts.
“We are delighted with the collaboration between the WFP and the government in our bold and shared vision of a hunger –free Zimbabwe,” said Rowe.
Under the programme WFP will help the government to meet their basic food and nutrition requirements during severe seasonal shocks or other crises, reduce stunting in children in line with national and global targets by 2025, help smallholder farmers have increased access to well-functioning agricultural markets by 2030 and aid Zimbabwe’s social protection system ensures that chronically vulnerable populations across the country are able to meet their basic needs all year round.
“The SDGs require we work together-no single actor can achieve them alone. WFP Zimbabwe’s five-year Strategic Plan is an excellent example of UN agencies working together to achieve Zero Hunger by supporting national food and nutrition security programmes through the 2016-2020 Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework,” Said Bishow Parajuli., UN resident Coordinator.
The country’s Strategic plan takes its cue from the 2015 ZeroHunger Strategic Review which is being led the Vice-Chancellor of the Women’s University, Professor Hope Sadza, which incorporates other stakeholders in Zimbabwe.. The review analyzes the root causes of hunger and gaps in support, through partnerships. It also highlights the need to move away from short –term food assistance to long term technical assistance, building sustainable systems to eradicate hunger and improve nutrition.
WFP is the world largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in and around 80 countries.
