We didn’t ban private Kombis, Gvt admits not paying them

Stranded commuters

The government says it has not banned the operations of private contractors in the public transportation sector.

However, the government says it noted the apparent withdrawal of services by some operators.

Private operators are being forced to join the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) franchise, but others are not happy with that requirement.

It is noted ZUPCO is failing to pay private contractors, hence the withdrawal of services.

Meanwhile, Cabinet stated that no effort is being spared in ensuring that the inconvenience to the travelling public is minimised.

Speaking during post cabinet briefing, Information Minister Monica Mustvangwa said the government would like to assure the nation that ZUPCO is engaging with contractors with a view to ensuring that all arrears are settled and resolving any outstanding matters.

Apparently, the state run ZUPCO is failing to cope with demand, leaving commuters stranded.

“Government has noted with concern the proliferation of unlicenced vehicles (mushikashika) & unroadworthy vehicles commuting various routes.

“The public is informed that Gvt through Police will enforce the law without fear or favour for the safety of the travelling public,” she said.

In his May Day address, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa declared war on unregistered Kombis.
