We Are Not Dead Yet: Douglas Mwonzora

In the wake of a humiliating electoral defeat in which none of his party candidates posted victory in last weekend’s by-elections, opposition MDC Alliance leader Douglas Mwonzora has warned critics against writing obituaries for his party, saying they’re ‘not dead yet’.

Mwonzora told journalists at a post-electoral press conference in Harare Monday afternoon that his party will work towards ensuring that they rise from the humbling defeat in the elections which saw his ally-turned-nemesis, and Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) leader, Nelson Chamisa grabbing all but just six of the 28 National Assembly posts at stake, to win the coming polls.

“It’s not time yet to write the MDC epitaph,” said Mwonzora, a lawyer-cum-politician who is one of the pioneering politicians of the original MDC under the late Morgan Tsvangirai.

“There are people who wish we were politically dead… We are not afraid of anyone,” he said.

“The intention is to win elections in the future. We have come from a disadvantage before, and we will come from this disadvantage now.”
