‘War vets want Mugabe to go, He must resign or be fired from Zanu PF’

It never rains for President Mugabe and his Zanu PF as another group of disgruntled war veterans have passed a vote of no confidence in him and symbolically fired him from the party.

A faction of about 10 000 liberation fighters aligned to ex Vice-President Joice Mujuru, yesterday said they had withdrawn their support for President Robert Mugabe and demanded he steps down, as he was “no longer fit for the Presidency”.

The war veterans, who include ex-Zanla commander, Parker Chipoyera, former top intelligence operative Retired Colonel Bastan Beta, Levy Gwarada and Ngoni Chitauro, among others, said their move was a follow up to the mandate they bestowed on Mugabe during the liberation war.

War veterans are a very important constituency of Zanu PF and they have done a lot in the past years to help the party survive election tough contests against the Movement for Democratic Change led by Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mugabe has also been very clear that a large section of war vets want him ‘gone by yesterday’ as they feel he is now too old and too tired to lead his party and government.

Mugabe who is now targeting 100 years does not agree with them and has vowed to stand for elections in 2018 if he is nominated by his party, a very likely scenario.
