USA to set up military base in Zambia, reports

News making rounds in neighboring Zambia is that the country’s government has agreed with the United States of America to establish a military base there.

Apparently, this has allegedly angered opposition New Heritage Party leader, Chishala Kateka who has since called on the President Hakainde Hichilema led United Party for National Development (UPND) administration to widely consult before allowing the United States to set up a base in Zambia.

In an exclusive interview with Spring24 TV, Kateka highlighted that many other countries in Africa have denied the U.S access to set up a base within their territories.

Reports are that on April the 25th 2022, the US announced that the United States Africa Command AFRICOM will open an office of security cooperation at the U.S embassy in Lusaka Zambia.

Apparently, following Hichilema and his party’s coming to power, the country has adopted a look West policy.

This is opposite from the past administration which had a look East policy, just like late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe adopted the look East policy after falling out with the West following chaotic land reform programme.
