Five people were burnt beyond recognition when two cars they were travelling in collided and caught fire near Mashava at around 4pm yesterday.
Police is yet to identify the bodies since both the cars and the persons inside were burnt beyond recognition.
National Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident and urged motorists to exercise caution on the road.
The accident happened at the 35km peg along Masvingo-Mbalabala Highway when a Toyota Mark X travelling from Masvingo collided with a Toyota Corolla coming from the opposite direction.
“We have received news of a horrific accident where two cars collided and were burnt to wrecks. All persons in the cars were burnt beyond recognition,” said Nyathi.
Sources said that the Mark X which was trying overtaking hit the back of a Honda Fit and then went on to collide with an oncoming Toyota Corolla which was travelling in the opposite direction.
The Honda Fit veered off the road and no one was injured. The Mark X had two passengers while the oncoming Toyota Corolla had three.
The charred bodies were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
