THE legal representatives of Elliot Mabeza, an official with Nelson Chamisa’s Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in Beitbridge, who faces allegations of contravening an unsanctioned rally in the border town on March 12, have confirmed his release from custody on $10 000 bail.
Mabeza, a CCC Beitbridge East chairperson got arrested Tuesday this week and spent a night in police cells before being granted granted bail, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, which represents him, said in a statement.
In remarks posted on their official Twitter handle this Thursday, the ZLHR said:
“Our lawyer Patrick Tererai has secured the release of Elliot Mabeza on ZWL10 000 bail after he spent 1 night in police detention when he got arrested Tuesday & charged with contravening Section 7(1)(a) of Maintenance of Peace & Order Act for allegedly failing to give notice of a public gathering reportedly held in Beitbridge on 12 March in Dulibadzimu suburb. Prosecutors alleged that Mabeza convened a procession of opposition @CCCZimbabwe supporters who used several vehicles to mobilise people to attend the opposition party’s rally scheduled on 13 March”.
