A tractor driver died on the spot after being involved in an accident with a haulage truck that was trying to overtake his vehicle, the truck driver also sustained serious injuries.
The accident occurred on Monday at 100 kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Clemence Mabweazara confirmed the accident to news crew, warning drivers against reckless driving to avoid disasters.
“One person died while another one was injured in a fatal accident that occurred at the 100 kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu road near Banket,” Mabweazara said.
“Two vehicles, a haulage truck and a tractor were both heading towards Chinhoyi from Banket. While at the 100 kilometre peg, the haulage truck tried to overtake the tractor and while in the process, the tractor suddenly turned right and was hit on the right side and both vehicles overturned resulting in the truck catching fire.”
Witnesses said the impact was big and huge flames were seen after the accident.
“The tractor suddenly turned and there was a huge impact. We don’t know what was in the truck. There were flames all over as a result of the impact and we suspect the driver of the tractor and the truck could have all died,” one of the witnesses said.
