Top Govt official cheats death

Education Director for Manicaland, Mr Edward Shumba, escaped unscathed when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a kombi along Mutare-Harare Highway last Friday. Mr Shumba’s vehicle was extensively damaged.  In an interview, Mr Shumba, confirmed the accident and said he was admitted in hospital for two days as doctors monitored his condition before being discharged.

“It was a scary accident that happened when I was driving from Harare. A kombi encroached into my lane and I tried in vain to avoid a head on collision. The car I was driving was extensively damaged, but luckily I escaped unhurt. I was, however, admitted in hospital on Saturday and Sunday as doctors monitored my condition. They said it was only the muscles that were strained and I needed a rest. I think I will be back at work next week. Otherwise, I thank the Almighty God for being with me through the scary incident,” said Mr Shumba in a telephone interview on Monday from his home in Harare.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter, Marymount Teachers’ College lecturer, Mrs Chiedza Magwizi, died when her vehicle was involved in an accident along the Mutare-Masvingo Highway last week. Fellow Marymount Teachers’ lecturer, Mrs Rosemary Mamhute, who was injured during the same accident is recovering at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.  Two other lecturers who were in the same vehicle have since been discharged. Marymount Teachers’ College principal, Mrs Petty Silitshena, described Mrs Magwizi’s death as a huge blow to the institution.

“It was really a tragic incident. Her death was a huge loss to us as an institution and the tertiary education sector at large. May her dear soul rest in peace. We wish the one in hospital a speedy recovery as well as our Provincial Education Director, Mr Shumba. To the two we say get well soonest,” said Mrs Silitshena. state media
