Teachers take to the Streets to Demand Salaries in US dollars

Faced by biting economic challenges which have rendered their monthly earnings virtually impotent, Zimbabwean teachers have vowed to engage in a street protest to pressure their demands to be paid in foreign currency.

The teachers are also irked by Government’s decision to slash their June salaries in light of the adverse economic impact of the Covid19 pandemic.

“Our leadership succumbed to the pressure from the membership. A street protest is on the cards.

On Monday 22 June we will demand USD salaries from our employer. June salaries were slashed at a time when prices are rising. Against all odds teachers will take to the streets,” the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) said in a tweet Tuesday.

Since taking over from the late Robert Mugabe after the November 2017 coup, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Government has faced unrelenting pressure from the civil service which feels hard done by the weakening of the local currency against the United States dollar.
