A 50-year old Zimbabwean mechanic based in neighboring Botswana died when a Load Haul Dump (LHD) loader tyre he was pumping exploded.
The tragic incident was confirmed by Cedric Sam, the general manager for Mupane Gold Mine, where the deceased Zimbabwean was working.
The mine is located in Northeastern Botswana 30km South-East of Francistown and it is the country’s sole gold operation.
Speaking to the media, Sam (pictured above) could not identify the man on the condition that his relatives back in Zimbabwe are yet to be informed of the sad news.
“I can certainly confirm that one of our mechanics died while inflating a tyre for one of our LHD loaders. Investigations are still on-going,” said Sam.
He also added, saying:
“So far, the police have been to the scene and we are waiting for officials from the department of mines to come and do their investigations.”
According to press reports from Botswana, officials from the department of mines had to travel to Francistown from Gaborone to carry out investigations at the mine.
