Report good, bad conduct by public entities, AG Chiri addresses media

Auditor-General Mildred Chiri says one of the most key functions of her office is to improve the lives of citizens, by auditing government departments and parastatals and reporting to Parliament, the AG enhances accountability in governance.

Chiri who is currently addressing a media workshop also highlights the need for journalists to report on both the good and bad conduct of public entities, saying this would provide a holistic view of public finance management.

Over the years, the AG’s office has unearthed massive corruption in government.

Meanwhile, her latest report has uncovered rampant corruption within government departments.

Apparently, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has also been found wanting after failing to account for millions of dollars (public funds).

The recent AG report also exposed corruption at Parliament of Zimbabwe involving fuel procurement.

The Office Of The Auditor General (OAG) is the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Zimbabwe whose vision is to be the centre of excellence in the provision of auditing services.

The SAI or OAG is manned by a vibrant workforce whose core values are commitment, respect, empathy, accountability, teamwork and integrity.

The SAI aspires to be relevant by keeping abreast with current global trends in finance, auditing and other relevant disciplines.

It also sustains this relevance by producing informative and timely reports with practical recommendations.

The SAI of Zimbabwe also demonstrates accountability and transparency by having its financial statements audited by an external auditing firm of chartered accountants.

Thus, the SAI also walks the talk.

In a bid to fully professionalise, the SAI has chosen to focus on the current three professional auditing qualifications, namely: Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (CA(Z)), Certified Public Accountants of Zimbabwe (CPAZ) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Therefore all new auditing recruits are expected to embark on any of the three professional auditing programmes.

This approach should continuously maintain the competence, experience and skills of the SAI and hence produce quality reports in a timely manner to the satisfaction of our stakeholders.

The SAI of Zimbabwe is a life learning institution and aims to ensure accountability and transparency in the public sector.
