Recalled History-Making Kwekwe Mayor Re-elected

In a refreshing augmentation to her political CV, former Kwekwe City Mayor Angeline Kasipo bounced back to Town House after she posted victory in the by-elections held last Saturday.

Kasipo, who made history by becoming the first female mayor for the Midlands mining town since Zimbabwe’s attainment of independence in 1980, breathed a huge sigh of relief after voters gave her another chance to represent Ward Ten for Kwekwe City Council.

She won the elections on the ticket of Nelson Chamisa’s opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party.

A businesswoman of repute with vast interests in the hospitality industry sector, Kasipo lost her grip on the mayoral post after falling victim to MDC-Alliance leader, Douglas Mwonzora massive purge on legislators and councilors aligned to Chamisa who, in turn, dumped the MDC-A brand to found the CCC.

Some 36 miles, or precisely 57km southwards, the Kwekwe scenario was replicating itself in Gweru where the city’s former mayor, Josiah Makombe garnered 940 votes to beat ZANU PF’s Tinarwo Elager who polled 492 votes and Patson Chingwaru of Mwonzora’s MDC Alliance who got a paltry 20 votes in Ward 2.

Like Kwekwe’s Kasipo, the ex-Gweru Mayor was also a victim of Mwonzora’s vicious purge on pro-Chamisa elements within the MDC Alliance.
