Prominent ex liberation fighter living in poverty

One of the most prominent pioneering commanders of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle Moffat Hadebe (nom de guerre Morris Dlomo) who led the crack Sipolilo Campaign in 1968 says he is now living from hand to mouth despite sacrifices with others to free the country from colonial rule.

Hadebe was later arrested with a John Zvandanda in Mozambique in 1972 and jailed.

Sadly, he was also arrested again in 1982 after the arms cache saga and jailed for three years at Chikurubi Prison with other top Zipra commanders, including Lookout Masuku and Dumiso Dabengwa.

Reflecting on the Wankie and Sipolilo Battles, the late Zapu leader Joshua Nkomo said in 1984 the fighting had “a profound impact on the course of the liberation struggle”.

Yet Hadebe and others now live in abject poverty despite their sacrifices due to failed leadership. -Newshawks
