President Emmerson Mnangagwa is today expected to officially launch the country’s labour migration, whose development was funded by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), with technical support from the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The launch will take place in Harare, and will be attended by United Nations resident co-ordinator Maria Ribeiro, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and Public Service mister Paul Mavima, among other stakeholders.
IOM spokesperson Fadzayi Nyamande Pangeti told the media yesterday that Zimbabwe’s national labour migration policy (NLMP) was given the green light by Cabinet in 2019, however, the launch was postponed as experts look at ways to syncronise it with government’s development programmes.
The policy is aimed at improving the governance of labour migration, to foster protection and empowerment of migrant workers and seeks to ensure that migration contributes to Zimbabwe’s socioeconomic development.
The event will also witness the launch of the Zimbabwe Disability Policy.
In a statement ahead of the launch of policy, IOM Zimbabwe, Chief of Mission, Mario Lito Malanca, congratulated the government on the milestone.
“Government’s commitment to making decent work a reality for Zimbabwean migrant workers is commendable.
“We are proud to have been part of the collaborative effort between the key stakeholders in the development and finalization of this policy that will help address good governance in the changing labour migration landscape,” Malanca said.
