In a scenario that can be attributed to the illegal gold mining activities, seven students were injured after a sinkhole opened up in the middle of a classroom at Globe and Phoenix Primary School, situated a few meters from Kwekwe central business district, this Thursday morning.
It is understood that the sinkhole emanated from a network of illegal gold mining shafts that ran under the school grounds which were dug by illegal gold panners, informally known as makorokoza, who have been operating in the area for some time.
This development also gives credence to claims that the whole of Kwekwe CBD is hanging on top of tunnels- a situation which, at one time led to amplified calls for the relocation of the Midlands town to a safer place.
Kwekwe is the hometown of Zimbabwe president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
