Norton woman arrested over US$300 000 fraud

A NORTON woman has been hauled to court in a matter in which she is being accused of trying to defraud an unsuspecting complainant of about US$300 000.

Brenda Chipunga was advised to deposit $200 000 as bail when she was arraigned before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi.

She will be back in court on April 24, pending finalisation of investigations.

Prosecutor Pardon Dziva said sometime in November last year, Chipunga connived with Tatenda Shaft and Terrence Nyakatonje, who are on the run, to dupe Enock Mungiriya.

The court heard that the three told Mungiriya that they were selling a 6000 square metre commercial stand, which is at the corner Remembrance Drive and Adbernnie Road, in Mbare.

Allegations are that the trio was actually misrepresenting facts to Mungiriya since they knew that they were not owners of that stand.

The State said Harare City Council stated that the land has neither been sold nor leased to any party and confirmed that the trio were actually misleading people.

Chipunga was then arrested before getting the money from Mungiriya.
