The National Aids Council (NAC) Gweru recently held an HIV sports gala in the city as part of the organisation’s initiative to disseminate HIV related information through sport.
The awareness campaign held at Gafa grounds, Gweru was targeting youth of school between 15-24 years.
Youth battled it out in various sporting disciplines including soccer and netball.
NAC Gweru District coordinator, Murari Hwingiri said they were educating youth issues surrounding HIV and AIDS prevention as well as cancer screening through sport.
“We noted that it is easy for youth to access information dissemination through sports. Hence we saw it a noble idea to host such a sports gala,” he said.
A renowned local business mogul Thandiwe Kavamba of Circle V lounge partnered with NAC in empowering the youth through sport and projects when she donated batches of day old chicks to all the eighty Gweru urban teams who took part in the NAC tournament.
“As part of corporate social responsibility l saw it ideal to assist youth in our community as it goes a long way in improving their welfare. It will also reduce crime in society if youth continuously engage in sporting activities as they will have something to occupy their minds,” said Kavamba.
Mr. Hwingiri applauded the support and urged other business moguls to also take it upon themselves to continuously assist the youth in their activities.
NAC’s mandate is to provide measures to combat the spread of HIV and management, coordination and implementation of programmes that reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS.
