Mnangagwa’s war on unlicensed, non- ZUPCO kombis leaves commuters stranded

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s blitz on unlicensed private and non-ZUPCO transporters has left many commuters in Harare stranded.

On some routes, desperate commuters are spending up to US$4 per day on fares, reports Newshawks.

Private transporters are being forced to join the state run Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO), the legislated monopoly.

On the other hand, ZUPCO is dismally failing to service routes.

In his message marking Worker’s Day, Mnangagwa, ordered the police crackdown on private transporters accused transporters of ripping off the public.

However, the transport crisis is worsening.

At least 70 drivers of unregistered vehicles were arrested on Sunday.

In Harare so far, more than 450 cars have been impounded.
