President Mnangagwa has hinted plans to form a Government of National Unity with MDC-Alliance after openly admitting that some of the opposition officials in public office are performing well with Harare Mayor Herbet Gomba being among the latest to be praised.

While addressing urban councillors in Bulawayo last Friday President Mnangagwa lauded MDC Mayor Gomba for transforming the city in almost a year in office.

“Gomba usazofamba uchizvikudza asi urikugona basa. I am impressed by beautfications in Samora Machel. They are so beautiful keep up the good work,” he said.

This was taboo under the late former president Robert Mugabe to shower praises to opposition members, especially MDC members who used to give him a tough time ahead of elections.

Therefore the gesture by President Mnangagwa might indicate that he is warming up for a GNU especially at a time economic and political experts are calling for a common ground between him and MDC President Nelson Chamisa due to economic meltdown experienced in the country.

President Mnangagwa did not only applaud Mayor Gomba, but infact challenged other mayors and chairpersons even from Zanu PF to take notes from him on how to manage their areas.

“Other councils l challenge you to go and learn from Mayor Gomba on how to maintain your areas in good shape,” he said.

GNU is expected to end days of economic woes experienced in the country which started since the disputed harmonised elections.
