Latest: Zimbabwe’s vice president ‘Mnangagwa’ visits Europe

Zimbabwe’s Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is currently in Switzerland attending United Nations Universal Human Rights Records meeting.

Mnangagwa told reporters that he is ready to present Zimbabwe’s ‘clean human rights report’ on Wednesday.

“Zimbabwe prides itself for having come up with a new constitution, as one of the recommendations of the 19th session. In addition, various legislations relating to child marriages and legal age of majority have been promulgated, while the country also instituted a Human Rights Commission, all in line with the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council,” said Mnangagwa.

However, Zimbabwe government has been criticised by civil societies and international rights groups for its selective and thin application of human rights laws.

The violent state response to recent demonstrations, the imprisonment and even death of some protesters  leaves a lot be done before Zimbabwe can have a better human rights record.
