Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity & Broadcasting Services Energy Mutodi has called on the government to implement price controls in order to protect the poor in the society.
Writing on social media, Mutodi said:
For a country that has no currency of its own, no competitive industry & no jobs, price control is the way to go in order to protect the poor. It’s very unfortunate that cabinet has not foreseen this but it’s time we take necessary steps. Happy 39th Birthday Zimbabwe.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has repeatedly stated that they will not introduce price controls although the latest increase in the price of bread from 1.80 up to 3.50 seems to have shaken the government which quickly moved to stop the increase
However, the instruction seems to have been disregarded because as of yesterday the price of bread had not gone down. Price controls also have the negative effects of creating shortages and deterring businesspeople from investing in the country.
