Massive power cuts loom for Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has warned of possible increased outages countrywide.
Noting on its microblog, Twitter account on Sunday, ZETDC said there will be increased “load curtailment” from 24 September 2022.
ZETDC said it’s experiencing technical challenges at its main Kariba and Hwange power stations, as well as import constraints.
“The utility is therefore conducting a maintenance exercise to ensure full restoration of service,” it said.
Zimbabwe has been experiencing reduced power generation due to aging equipment at its Kariba hydro power station and breakdowns at its main coal-driven power generators at Hwange.
To supplement its shortfalls power in generation, the country has relied mostly on power imports from South Africa’s Eskom, Hydro Cahora Bassa of Mozambique and Zambia.
