Man dies from drinking beer all day

Gulping an undiluted spirit cost a 36-year-old Chimanimani man his life last week.

Chipinge District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera, confirmed the incident which happened on March 11 in Chimanimani.

“Yes, we can confirm the death of Taurai Mutumbawenzou of Manzou Village under Chief Muusha’s area, Chimanimani who passed away on March 11 after drinking a spirit excessively.

“Mutumbawenzou was drinking with his friends, John Dezha and Richard Dezha at Dzodzai Bar, Copa, Chimanimani when he died.

“They drank from 6am to 9pm. At around 9pm, Mutumbawenzou slept in the bar. He started vomiting and a policeman who was there, Constable Nyoni rendered him first aid.

“Nyoni with the assistance of John and Richard took Mutumbawenzou to Ngorima Clinic for further management. On arrival at the clinic, Mutumbawenzou was pronounced dead,’’ said Asst Insp Kadzuraumera.

A report was made to the police who attended the scene and no foul play is suspected.

Post-mortem was waived by senior Chipinge magistrate, Mr Noah Gwatidzo.

In an unrelated incident, a 19-year-old epilepsy patient drowned in a stagnant pool in Chipinge on Monday.

Neni Gezani Simango of Gumira Village under Chief Musikavanhu’s area left home to fetch some water from a stagnant pool. She drowned in the pool.

Asst Insp Kadzuraumera confirmed the incident.

“On March 13, Neni who is an epileptic patient was left home by her father, Misheck Simango (64) who went to attend a funeral in the same village.

‘’When Simango returned, he found Neni absent and he asked his younger daughter, Naisha (seven) about her whereabouts. He was informed that she had gone to fetch some water.

‘’Simango proceeded to the pool and found Neni’s body floating in the pool. With the help of other villagers, Simango managed to retrieve Neni’s body. The matter was reported to police at Chibuwe Police Post,’’ said Asst Insp Kadzuraumera.

Police attended the scene and no foul play is suspected.

Mr Gwatidzo waived post-mortem.
