Malawian opposition leader petitions President Chakwera over maize sale to Zimbabwe

Malawian opposition leader Kondwani Nankhumwa has written to President Lazarus Chakwera asking him to intervene and stop the sale of maize to Zimbabwe, reports Nyasa Times.

Nankhumwa argues that Malawi is facing its own food crisis and should not be feeding Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is planning to import 400,000 tonnes of white maize from Zambia and Malawi, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) said, as the country faces a reduced harvest this year blamed on erratic rains.

Zimbabwe has faced food insecurity since the turn of the century when it seized white-owned farms and a series of droughts.

The country will this monthend expected to take delivery of its first consignment of maize imported from Malawi as private players seek to plug the gap in the supply of the staple food.

The country needs 2,2 million tonnes of maize, of which 1,8 million are for human consumption, while 350 000 tonnes are for stock feeds.
