Kaizer Chiefs hit by setbacks as Pirates dominate Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs’ preparations for the Soweto Derby were severely disrupted before kick-off, a reality that was reflected in their heavy 3–0 league defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Speaking after the match, co-head coach Cedric Kaze revealed that the absence of key players Brandon Petersen, Mfundo Vilakazi and Mduduzi Shabalala was due to a combination of medical, injury and tactical reasons. Petersen’s omission attracted the most attention, with Bruce Bvuma making his first appearance of the season in one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic calendar.

The result marked a fifth consecutive league derby defeat for Kaizer Chiefs, further extending their painful wait for redemption against Orlando Pirates. Once again, the derby exposed Chiefs’ fragility, as they struggled physically and emotionally in key moments.

First-half goals from Tshepang Moremi and Oswin Appollis effectively decided the contest before Chiefs could settle. Substitute Evidence Makgopa added a late goal to seal a dominant performance by Pirates.

After the match, a visibly disappointed Kaze apologised to supporters and admitted his side had not met expectations. He acknowledged that Chiefs were slow to react early in the game despite preparing for Pirates’ set-piece threat. The team also lost crucial midfield battles, allowing Pirates to control the tempo.

Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou credited his team’s efficiency and clinical finishing, saying their performance reflected the high standards he expects.

Kaze also confirmed that captain and first-choice goalkeeper Petersen had been hospitalised and underwent surgery shortly before the derby, describing it as a major blow. Vilakazi missed the game due to injury, while Shabalala was left out for tactical reasons.

The trio’s absence added to Chiefs’ challenges on a difficult afternoon, as Pirates underlined their growing dominance in South Africa’s biggest rivalry.
