He might not be exactly in the mould of John Kavhati who can imitate Charles ‘CNN’ Mabika pound for pound, Bornwell Siduli is a force to reckon with.
The former Zimbabwe Republic Police Gwanda FC player, caught the attention of people who attended the 2023 Propol Gala at the University of Zimbabwe grounds with his football commentary.
Siduli, popularly known as Nkalakata in Gwanda, even had some fans believing they were being entertained by veteran commentator Charles “CNN” Mabika.
Siduli told H-Metro that he was inspired by his brother to follow football and Mabika is his idol.
“My brother Shepherd is the one who used to collect some newspaper and magazine football stories and stick them in our room,” said Siduli.
“My brother was a staunch Highlanders’ supporter and, from reading the newspaper and magazine football cuttings, I got to know all football teams, including names of players.
“I spent most of my time listening to Mabika’s radio commentaries and got inspired.
“I started my commentary when Zimbabwe drew 1-1 with Zambia in an AFCON qualifier at the National Sports Stadium in 1993 after a late equaliser from Kalusha Bwalya.
“My love for radio grew so much that on Sundays I would buy blank cassettes for recording commentaries.”
Siduli’s playing career started when he joined Legends of Marymount from Mutare in 2013 before leaving to join ZRP Gwanda two years later.
